Hi there! It’s Bedros Team member Lindsay Curtis here. As a mom of two, I’m always looking for kid-approved weekend activities, and as a buyer’s agent, I represent many families with children who are new to the Knoxville area. Whether you are already a local or moving to town, Knoxville offers a variety of attractions fit for kids of all ages. I’ve compiled a list of a few of my favorite activities along with other tried-and-true local favorites. I hope you’ll find a fun new activity to try, and if you have any suggestions of your own, feel free to leave them in the comments below!
Explore the Outdoors
Ijams Nature Center
Located in the growing South Knoxville area, Ijams Nature Center is certainly a place you could spend a full day exploring. Ijams offers multiple hiking and biking trails at varying levels of difficulty so you can pick the perfect trail depending on your child’s age and endurance level. If you need help choosing a trail, the friendly staff members at the Visitor Center are always to help. Ijams is also home to Mead’s Quarry. You can rent a canoe, kayak or Stand-up-paddle-board (SUP) and enjoy the calm waters. Ijams offers too many wonderful activities to mention in one blog post but you can find more information and the event calendar at https://ijams.org/things-to-do-and-see/
Spend the day with tigers, elephants, giraffes, and more animals at Zoo Knoxville. Kids love the variety of interactive experiences that Zoo Knoxville offers daily at no additional cost to general admission. You can enjoy one of the animal encounters where zoo-goers learn about specific animals and their diet and habitat. There are many other programs to choose from as well, including behind-the-scenes tours, night safaris and bedtime with the beasts. Check out all that Zoo Knoxville has to offer at https://www.zooknoxville.org/experiences/activities/
Smoky Mountain Deer Farm Exotic Petting Zoo and Deer Farm Riding Stables
Located just outside of Knoxville in Sevierville, Tennessee, Smoky Mountain Deer Farm Exotic Petting Zoo and Deer Farm Riding Stables is an easy day trip. At the exotic petting zoo, kids can pet AMHA mini horses. Mini-donkeys, baby goats, zebras and more. After enjoying the petting zoo, head over to the riding stables where children 5 and up can ride horses along a wide, well-shaded trail. For rates and more information, visit https://deerfarmzoo.com/petting-zoo/
Learn a Little
Muse Knoxville is a children’s museum located in East Knoxville that focuses on combining education with play. They also offer a second smaller location in West Town Mall. The Muse is perfect for curious kids who love to learn! The exhibits and activities focus on science, wellness and the arts. Exhibits such as STEM Station and Make Space offer kids the opportunity for hands-on activities to help them grasp the educational concepts a bit easier. https://www.themuseknoxville.org/
Three Rivers Rambler
Hop aboard the Three Rivers Rambler, a steam train that provides rides from the train depot located near The University of Tennessee to the start of the Tennessee River. Themed train rides are available during the fall and winter months. The winter ride is called the “Christmas Lantern Express,” and it is a kid favorite because of the holiday treats and festive décor! For a complete schedule of the rides, visit: https://www.threeriversrambler.com/
Just Have Fun
The Cinebarre in West Town Mall is a top choice with my kids when choosing weekend activities! The Cinebarre is a movie theater and restaurant combination. You can enjoy a tasty meal before you head into the theater or you can order food from your theater seat. Once your belly is full, kick back and relax in the luxury loungers and enjoy the show. Check out what is playing at https://www.regmovies.com/movies.
Adventure Action Park
Located in West Knoxville, The Adventure Action Park features multiple attractions for kids of all ages. Bounce on the massive trampoline court, climb the bouldering wall, zipline over a foam pit or enjoy one of the many other fun activities. Adventure Action Park offers memberships that are perfect for families that visit on a regular basis. Memberships range from $20 a month to $120 a month.
